The Different Positions at Pret
TEAM MEMBER (TM)
When you start in a shop you will spend the first few months learning the very basics of being a Pret TM. There is a graduation after 10 days to check your initial learning after which you will learn all aspects of working in a shop and work towards your TM* graduation (this normally takes about three months but depends on how fast you learn).
TEAM MEMBER STAR (TM*)
A TM* is a TM who has completed and graduated through the TM* training. TM*s are very important to Pret and its customers as they make up the majority of our shop teams and are responsible for making delicious food and providing fantastic customer service. TM*s can go on to become Hot Chefs, TMT’s or Baristas if they are fantastic at their job and there is position available for them.
HOT CHEF (HC)
Our Hot Chefs are experienced TM*’s who have moved up the career ladder. They have gone through 8 weeks of training to gradute for this role. They have responsibilities in the shop to maintain all hot food quality and equipment, to train other members of their team on standard changes, to deliver informative team briefs all about hot food and be a role model.
BARISTA
A Barista is someone who knows about coffee. They will have attended a course about coffee and basic training skills and proven to their GM and Ops that they can make great coffees consistently and maintain the coffee machines, keeping them in tip top condition. They are tested on both ability and knowledge and are the champions of Pret coffee! They also have a big job of training all TM’s basic coffee making skills.
TEAM MEMBER TRAINER (TMT)
Our TMT’s are very talented TM*s who have been selected because of their ability to explain and communicate their passion for doing everything to the highest possible standard. They have received special training to help them to train others. They will train new TMs and help them become TM*s. They will also help train the whole shop on new products or equipment and on standards that can be improved through additional training sessions.
LEADERS (KL or FL)
These are highly trained and experienced members of the team who have worked their way up the career ladder (the ones with the black hats!). They supervise the kitchen or the shop floor. They are responsible for the smooth running of their area for that particular shift. They lead the team to provide delicious food and drink and amazing service.
MANAGER IN TRAINING (MIT)
MITs are training to become Managers. Pret tries to promote from within as much as possible. MITs have a special training plan to complete which is tailored to their needs. This will last anywhere between 5 to 12 weeks depending on existing skills and knowledge.
ASSISTANT MANAGER (AM)
An AM is someone who is well on their way to becoming a General Manager and is learning how to manage the day-to day business of a shop with the guidance of their General Manager (GM). They have responsibility for an area of the business whether it is the shop or the kitchen.
GENERAL MANAGER (GM)
A GM is the “big chief” of the shop. They are totally accountable for the smooth running of their business from controling costs and managing the budget to making sure the team and every customer is happy, safe and enjoying being in Pret!
